Louisiana is advancing a statewide data-driven approach to reduce chronic absenteeism that equips districts with real-time tools and actionable insights.
The Opportunity
Although Louisiana’s chronic absenteeism rate has slightly declined from its postpandemic peak, the state seeks to go further. Districts currently need standardized real-time tracking tools necessary to move beyond reporting into active, evidence-based interventions for students at risk of absenteeism.
The Support
The Southwest Comprehensive Center is supporting the statewide scaling of the Power of Presence initiative by developing a comprehensive suite of metrics, impact and fidelity trackers, and field-ready technical assistance guides. In-depth data analysis and iterative feedback cycles conducted with district leaders will help ensure the tools effectively identify and address localized barriers to attendance.
Desired Outcomes
The project will enable the Louisiana Department of Education to automate attendance monitoring and provide districts with the infrastructure needed to implement evidence-based attendance strategies with high fidelity. By shifting from reactively reporting to proactively providing data-informed supports, the state intends to progress toward stabilizing student participation and improving long-term academic outcomes statewide.
