Project: New Mexico SEA Leadership Development and Executive Coaching Program

New Mexico is strengthening executive capacity of state educational agency directors through a targeted development program focused on effective implementation and team leadership.

The Opportunity

New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) leaders play a key role in translating strategy and policy into effective implementation. These directors manage complex initiatives, lead teams across functions, and operate in fast-changing, high-accountability environments. Targeted leadership development at this level will support the state in improving implementation quality, strengthening cross-bureau coordination, and sustaining organizational effectiveness.

The Support

The Southwest Comprehensive Center is partnering with NMPED to deliver a 6-month, cohort-based leadership development program tailored to the realities of leadership in a state educational agency. The program combines monthly cohort learning, peer collaboration, and individualized executive coaching to help participants apply leadership skills directly to their daily work. Ongoing feedback and structured reflection ensure the program remains responsive to participant needs and aligned with departmental priorities.

Desired Outcomes

As a result of this program, NMPED’s midlevel directors will be skilled in clear communication and strong team management and prepared to effectively lead complex initiatives.
