Oklahoma is expanding and refining its teacher recruitment and retention strategies to strengthen local teacher pipelines and address workforce shortages.
The Opportunity
Oklahoma has made meaningful progress by investing in recruitment initiatives such as scholarships, alternative certification pathways, and centralized tools that expand access to the teaching profession. Building on these efforts, the state has an opportunity to strengthen coordination across programs, enhance candidate engagement, and leverage real-time data to further support strategic decisionmaking and targeted outreach. With growing momentum and commitment, the state is well positioned to align its resources and amplify the impact of its teacher recruitment ecosystem to meet district and workforce needs.
The Support
The Southwest Comprehensive Center is partnering with the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) to expand its recruitment capacity through research, coaching, and implementation support tailored to the state’s priorities. This includes strengthening cross-state collaboration through curated networks, enhancing the Teach OK website with user-centered tools such as financial and tuition calculators, and developing a Teacher Pipeline dashboard to inform strategy. Together, these efforts are designed to build on existing strengths by improving access to actionable information, increasing candidate engagement, and supporting more coordinated, data-informed recruitment approaches.
Desired Outcomes
In the near term, OSDE will strengthen its use of data-driven tools and expand collaboration with peer states to guide recruitment strategies. Over time, these approaches will become embedded in practice, resulting in more refined, consistent, and strategic recruitment efforts supported by effective tools and partnerships. Ultimately, Oklahoma will sustain a responsive, well-aligned educator pipeline supported by clear pathways, strong collaboration, and data-informed decisionmaking.
